Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj
Cast: Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan

“A ‘Master’fully crafted action thriller albeit with a passable storyline”

As the removal of the ban on dubbing of Tamil/Telugu and other language movies into Kannada is slowly materialising, Kannada film buffs like me who like to watch movies only if it is in the language which they completely understand, are getting to watch a wide variety of dubbed content in Kannada. ‘Master’ is an addition to this and it sure is exciting to watch, as the film has some top notch dubbing qualities in its making.

The story revolves around an alcoholic professor named JD and a cruel gangster, Bhavani who employs children to carry out illegal activities in a juvenile school. Once JD is sent to the juvenile school, he has to fight against Bhavani and save the children from him. How exactly he does this remains the focal point of the entire film.

This film has many excellent attributes associated with it. Be it the gruesome cinematography or sharp editing, be it the peppy music or the solid acting – all are top grade, making this film technically brilliant. However what this film lacks is the enthusiasm in story telling. The story of the film is not gripping enough to keep the viewer glued to the screen.

The screenplay is pacy during the first half of the film but becomes slow and tedious in the second half, eventually becoming quite draggy at the end. The film has some amazing musical tracks like the foot tapping ‘Putta Story’ or the breezy and romantic ‘Avana Kanna Kandaga’ and also the title song ‘Mastru Coming’ takes the cake with the thumping tappanguchi beats!

The dubbing quality is surprisingly really good with perfectly lip synced dialogues and meaningful lyrics in the songs. The attention to details like the Kannada fonts in the scenes are however missing. Nonetheless you just feel like you’re watching a Kannada film itself because of the perfect dubbing quality. Any Kannadiga who is planning to watch this movie should definitely watch the Kannada dubbed version itself.

Vijay looks in perfect control throughout the film and he has acted skilfully. Vijay Sethupathi on the other hand also has carried out his part really well in the negative role. Malavika Mohanan doesn’t impress as she has got very less screen time. All other supporting actors have performed well.

To sum it up, this film may have a weak story but overall it is crafted really well. The technical aspects of this movie are ably handled with impressive music, acting and cinematography making it a good one time watch in the theatres. And last but not the least: “Ganchali bidi Kannadadalle nodi!”
